Governor John Kasich recently announced his support for a bill that would ban hidden compartments in motor vehicles. Unfortunately, the bill's definition of "hidden compartments" probably includes safes, lockboxes, and other devices that gun owners currently use to lawfully and safely store their firearms.

The proposed law could create an impossible "Catch-22" for gun owners. For example, the Ohio Revised Code now includes "a closed package, box, or case" as a means to transport an unloaded rifle. But according to a draft of the proposed bill, a "hidden compartment" would include "any compartment, space, box, or other closed container that is added or attached to existing compartments, spaces . . ."

You can see the problem.

If Governor Kasich's proposal gains traction without addressing the legitimate concerns of gun owners, OFCC stands ready to oppose it.
