Recently, a group of open carry activists went too far in their gun rights activism. They carried semiautomatic rifles into a Sonic in the San Antonio area, causing a stir that sent ripples through gun rights organizations across America. Although Open Carry Texas has since issued a statement discouraging similar activities in private businesses, their advice comes too late.
Two major anti-gun organizations, Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety, seized upon the opportunity to exert pressure upon Sonic. They began gathering thousands of signatures through an online petition, demanding that Sonic prohibit firearms in all its restaurants.
But then Sonic went too far. Instead of asking gun owners to exercise discretion when carrying firearms into their restaurants, Sonic asked "that customers refrain from bringing guns onto our patios or into our indoor dining areas." In essence, Sonic has asked us to disarm and surrender our right to self- defense before entering their restaurants.
Use the form on this page to sign the petition to Sonic's CEO, Clifford Hudson, asking him to issue a common-sense gun policy which allows legally qualified customers to carry concealed handguns into Sonic restaurants.
